The Matthews 24” × 36” Black Flag, commonly referred to as a cutter, is a light-control tool used to block, shape, or subtract light on set. It is constructed with a rigid metal frame wrapped in light-absorbing black fabric, designed to eliminate light spill without introducing reflections or color contamination.

The flag is mounted via a standard grip pin, allowing attachment to C-stands, grip heads, or boom arms. Its size makes it suitable for precise control of key, fill, or edge light, as well as cutting highlights off backgrounds, faces, or reflective surfaces.

The fabric is heat-resistant and suitable for use close to tungsten, HMI, or high-output LED sources when positioned correctly. The rigid frame ensures stability during positioning and maintains shape over repeated use.
